DESCRIPTION
The house is approached up North Church Street by a path leading to the church or by a garden gate in Church Lane. At the front, a wrought iron gate leads into a very pretty garden with an entrance portico. The front door opens into a hall which gives access to the principal reception rooms and has a door leading down to the ancient wine cellar. To the front is a bright, well proportioned drawing room with working fireplace and carved wood surround. Across the hall from this is a similarly proportioned dining room with serving hatch to the kitchen, a working fire with painted Ashford marble surround and a window overlooking the front garden. An inner hall leads to a cloakroom and the sitting room which has a view down North Church Street to the town. The sitting room has a stone fireplace flanked by, on one side, a very old built-in oak cupboard and on the other side by a built-in bookcase. There is another bookcase and two windows overlooking the garden. A further inner hall has a door to the garden and leads through to the kitchen/breakfast room which has a range of Smallbone low level units, a large dresser and a full height pine cupboard. There is plumbing for a dishwasher and space for a fridge. A white, two oven gas AGA is recessed into a fireplace with stone mantle and original hanging hook. Adjacent to the kitchen is a walk-in pantry and a large utility room which also has a door leading to a large storage space. To the first floor is a good sized master bedroom with wardrobes and an en suite bathroom with shower. There is a dual aspect guest bedroom with full length window enjoying superb views across the town to the golf course. There are three further bedrooms (one of which is currently in use as an office), two further bathrooms and a separate w.c. To the rear of the house is a very pretty mature garden mainly laid to lawn with borders and high surrounding walls thus making it very private despite being in the heart of the town. At the end of the garden is a single garage with off road parking for a further car.
Bakewell is a pretty market town in the heart of the Peak District National Park with a good range of local shopping, transport and recreational facilities together with a weekly market. The spa town of Buxton with its world renowned Opera House is a short drive away and the larger conurbations of Chesterfield and Sheffield are within easy reach with their more extensive facilities and excellent transport links to the rest of the country.

HISTORICAL NOTE
A wonderful house with an amazing history that, despite its appearance as an eighteenth century house has been continuously occupied for at least eight hundred years. It is so called because of its connections with the Chantry of Our Lady and the Chantry of the Holy Cross, medieval institutions which engaged priests to say masses in Bakewell Church. Roman and Saxon remains have been found within a short distance. It is possible that the house was used as a guest house for the Minster Church which existed in Bakewell in the seventh to eleventh centuries. The house changed hands many times during the following centuries and at some stage was divided into two parts then called Chantry House and Chantry Cottage. Chantry House then passed into the hands of an old Bakewell family who purchased the house in 1864, holding on to it until 1930 when the last member of the family died. In 1931 the house was sold to the church as a Vicarage for Vicar Barrow. When Chantry Cottage became empty in 1935 it was added to Chantry House making the one again. In 1939 the new Vicarage on the other side of the churchyard was vacated and the Vicar moved there. The Chantry House was then tenanted until 1960 when it was sold by the church to another well known local family. It was sold twice more before our clients acquired the property in 1982.
